Tuckpointing Cost Estimator for Evansville
Pick how much wall is failing, roughly when the house was built, how high the work is, and what the joints look like, and this gives you the range most Evansville jobs fall in. It is built from the same numbers published on the pricing page, and it does not ask for an email.
Two honest notes before you use it. The job minimum is real: even a small proper repoint means sending our crew, matching the mortar, and waiting out cure time, which is why the base starts at $500 to $800. And the single biggest lever in the whole calculation is the age of the brick, because pre-1930 masonry needs lime mortar and hand tools, not a grinder and a bag of Type S.
What each answer changes
- Wall area is the main driver. Measure the failing section, not the whole house. The honest advice on most Evansville homes is to repoint the chimney, the sills, and the north wall rather than pay for four elevations that do not need it.
- Age of the brick sets the mortar. The National Park Service’s Preservation Brief 2 requires repointing mortar to be softer and more vapor permeable than the units, and putting Type S at roughly 1,800 psi into a wall built for something closer to Type K at 75 spalls the brick face instead of the joint. The mortar comparison page explains it in one screen.
- Height is access. Ground-level work off a ladder is cheap. A two-story north elevation or a chimney above a steep roof means scaffolding, and that is real money.
- Joint condition is how far the water got. Joints that are only recessed are a spot repoint. Hollow joints with loose or spalled units mean brick replacement at $20 to $40 each on top of the repointing, which is covered on the spalling brick faces page.
What the calculator cannot see
It cannot see a rusted lintel behind a stair-step crack, a chimney crown that has been letting water into the stack for a decade, or a sill that has lost its slope. All three change the scope, and all three are cheaper to catch now: the step cracks page, the cracked chimney crown page, and the cracked limestone sill page each take a couple of minutes to read. If the chimney is your main worry, the chimney repair cost estimator is the better tool.
Send the estimate to the form with one click and add photos: a wide shot per elevation, a close-up of the worst joints with a coin for scale, and the chimney from the ground. You get back a scope with the grind depth, the mortar type, and the joint profile named in writing. Work runs April through November, since mortar goes in with wall temperatures between 40 and 95 degrees.
What will repointing my brick cost?
Four questions. Every range is built from the prices published on our pricing page, so this is a realistic number before anyone stands in your yard.
Every line comes from our published pricing: $8 to $14 per square foot on modern brick, $12 to $20 on historic lime work, $1,500 to $6,000 for a two-story elevation, and a $500 to $800 minimum on any visit.
Send this estimate to the quote formAn estimate, not a quote. The firm number comes after photos or a look at the wall, and it does not move after that.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do these numbers come from?
The same table on our pricing page: $8 to $14 per square foot for repointing modern brick, $12 to $20 for historic lime work, $1,500 to $6,000 for one two-story elevation, $20 to $40 per brick for replacement, and a $500 to $800 service minimum. The calculator adds the area band and then adjusts for mortar type, height, and how far the joints have gone.
How do I measure the wall area?
Width times height of the area that actually needs work, in feet, and do not subtract small windows. A wall 30 feet wide and 20 feet tall is 600 square feet. Most houses do not need the whole wall done, so measure the failing section, usually the chimney, one elevation, or the courses near grade.
Why does pre-1930 brick cost more to repoint?
Because it has to be done by hand in a softer mortar. Preservation Brief 2 warns that power saws on thin brick joints almost always damage the units, so soft historic brick gets hand chisels, and the mortar has to be matched for color, sand, and strength rather than poured out of a bag. That is time, and it is the difference between $8 to $14 and $12 to $20 a square foot.
Do I have to give an email to see the result?
No. There is no gate and no signup. The range updates as you change the dropdowns, and sending it to the quote form is optional.
