Why Evansville foundations shed mortar

How a basement wall repoint goes

  1. Diagnose the water. Where does it show, when, and after what? Water through the joints after rain points at the wall and the grade. Water at the floor-wall joint or through the slab is hydrostatic and mortar will not fix it. Efflorescence maps the paths.
  2. Rake the joints. Failed mortar comes out to at least 3/4 inch, and on old lime work usually until sound mortar is reached, with hand tools on soft brick and stone so the arrises and the stone faces survive. On rubble walls the raking follows the joint wherever it goes.
  3. Clean and dampen. Joints rinsed of sand and salts, then left damp with no standing water. Old brick is misted ahead of time so it does not pull the water out of the new mortar.
  4. Pack in lifts. Mortar packed in roughly 1/4-inch layers, each to thumbprint hardness before the next, until flush. Deep stone joints take many lifts and a day or two.
  5. Tool to match. Flush or slightly recessed on most basement walls, struck to match the original on exposed stone.
  6. Cure. Basements stay cool and damp, which is good for lime mortar; exterior trench work is covered against rain and never placed below 40 degrees and falling.
  7. Fix the source. Downspouts extended, grade pitched away from the wall, window wells drained. Often the cheapest part of the job and the part that makes the repoint last.

Interior repointing can be done in any month, which makes it the natural winter job for a crew, and the price reflects that. Exterior repointing needs excavation, a dry trench, and the April to November window; NWS Paducah puts Evansville’s average last freeze at April 6 and first at October 29.

When mortar is not the answer
